I’m a musicologist, I own and operate a radio station, I’m a musician, a producer, and I own my own independent record label, so I know a thing or two about music. Allen Collins and Joe Walsh are both fantastic guitarists, but once you analyze both of their catalogs of performances, if you pay attention, you will come to the conclusion that Joe Walsh is a better guitarist than Allen Collins, but it’s a tough one.

Just because he’s bigger, doesn’t mean he’s better than Joe.

Allen Collins is more famous than Joe Walsh. Free Bird is one of the best known songs & guitar solos in the world. Allen Collins had many great guitar solos. If you don’t know that then you haven’t listened to much Skynyrd or to the Rossington Collins and Allen Collins bands. The James Gang can’t begin to compare to the Skynard of the 70s. The Eagles had some talent, but they were a Hollywood pop band. There music can not compare to Skynyrds.

    wheres the sound?

yes, I am seriously serious. Allen Collins is very far away from the best American guitarist. And that comment about the history of the world is ridiculous. Lynard Skynard is actually one of my favorite bands, but Joe Walsh is a far better and more versatile guitarist, which is why he is much more famous than Collins. listen to some of Walsh’s solo stuff, james gang stuff, barnstorm stuff, and eagles stuff to see his versatility. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not trying to cut down Collins.

are you seriously serious dude? WOW you have listened to zero Lynyrd Skynyrd songs. I mean Joe Walsh is a pretty good guitarist but he would NEVER beat Allen Collins in ANYTHING Allen Collins is not only the best American Guitarist ever but possibly the greatest Guitarist in the history of the WORLD. every one of his solos are epic. and his rhythym work is simply the best. ALLEN COLLINS IS THE FREAKIN MAN!!!!!! Fly on Freebird!!!

Walsh definately wins. His solos, especially in his early James Gang and Barnstorm days, are amazing. Freebird is Collins only great solo. Collins doesn’t stand a chance. Walsh best solos are probably in “Turn to Stone”, “The Bomber”, and “Stop”.

yea collins took the solo in the end and was then joined by either ed king in the early days or steve gaines in the later days. rossington did the slide parts in the beginning and throughout the song. btw collins all the way my favorite guitarist

Allen Collins 100%. In the studio, Allen nailed the solo on the first take. Then he was asked by producer Al Kooper to do it again, mistakes were made in the 2nd take and they were left in.
Joe Walsh participated in the solo to “Hotel” He did not write it and he only performed part of it. The music and solo to “Hotel” was written by Don Felder.
